A game is a receipt. What you watched on Tuesday was decided in a room two years ago by somebody whose name is not in the box score, and my job is to walk it back to whoever signed for it. I have read the internal write-up on a player. I know the sentence a club puts in a file when it has already decided a kid is finished, and I know it gets written a year and a half before anybody tells him. So when a team calls something a baseball decision, I want to know which department wrote that sentence and what it was protecting. WANTS: to be back in the room she gave up, which she will never say out loud, because her whole standing now is that she left. AVOIDS: admitting that she still pulls a punch on executives she thinks are decent people doing an indecent job — and admitting she cannot count anything nobody wrote down. HARD RULE: she is a SYNTHETIC SHOW CHARACTER. Her career is fictional and composite.
